It’s every traveller's worst nightmare: You go somewhere, get food poisoning and spend your holiday in bed feeling sick. Don’t worry! There are lots of things you can do to avoid getting food poisoning. Here are our top tips on what to eat – and what not to eat – when you travel:

DO

  • Find out as much as you can about the food and eating habits in a country before you go there.
  • Eat at popular tourist spots when possible.
  • Eat food that is fresh and fully cooked.
  • Drink only bottled water and bottled drinks.
  • Always take antibacterial wipes with you.
  • Wash your hands after you use the bathroom and before you eat.
  • Take plastic plates, spoons and forks with you from home to use at restaurants.
  • Take medicine for food poisoning. If you do get food poisoning, the most important thing to do is drink lots of (bottled) water until you feel better.

DON’T
  • Don’t eat raw foods unless they’re foods you can peel or shell, like some fruits and nuts.
  • Don’t eat dairy products or anything made from raw eggs, which might include some salad dressings and desserts like mousse and tiramisu.
  • Don’t eat street food. If you really want to try street food, buy it from stalls that are popular with the locals.
  • Don’t eat food that has been kept warm for a long time.
  • Don’t get ice in your drinks unless it’s made from bottled water.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask questions about food before you buy it, including where it came from and how and when it was cooked.
