Travel to the US
15.01.2012
Getting ready to travel to the US? That's exciting! Before packing your bags and hopping on a plane, there’s one important thing you need to do – get permission from US officials to visit their country. Here are our top tips on the legalities of travelling to the US:
- People from most European countries, including Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, can stay in the US for up to 90 days under the Visa Waiver Programme.
- However, you must apply at https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov for authorization to travel at least 72 hours before your flight. The authorization is valid for multiple trips over two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.
- Your passport must be valid for at least 90 days after you arrive in the US and you must have a return or onward ticket.
- When you arrive in the US, you will need to show immigration officials your passport, your ticket, and a completed I-94W form, which your airline will give to you on the plane.
- If you travel on to Canada or Mexico, you can return to the US within 90 days of first arriving in the US. If you are travelling to another country, you can return to the US at any time.
- If you plan to stay in the US for longer than 90 days and/or to work or study there, you must apply for a special visa and receive it before you travel. You will also need a special visa if you’ve ever been arrested, outstayed a US visa or have a communicable disease.
- You can read about the different visas that are available and how to apply for them at http://travel.state.gov/visa.
