Multicultural cities like London and New York have food from all over the world. But Asian restaurants don’t have just knives and forks for their customers. They also have chopsticks. And that’s why it’s a good idea to learn how to use chopsticks before you leave home.

More than a billion people in China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam and other parts of Asia use chopsticks to eat their food. You can learn to use chopsticks too. Here's how:
  • Buy chopsticks made of wood or bamboo because they’re the easiest to use.
  • Hold them between the thumb and fingers of your right hand, about a third of the way up and make sure the tips are together. Then move the top chopstick up and down. Watch the "Howcast" video below.
  • Try to pick up foods. Start with big pieces of meat and vegetables and then try smaller pieces of food like grains of rice.
  • Practise as much as you can. You will get much better at it after a while.
  • Before using chopsticks in public, it's a good idea to learn a bit about Asian etiquette. It’s not polite, for example, to play with your chopsticks, use them to move bowls or plates or stand them up in your food.
