How to use money when you travel
21.08.2010
People say money makes the world go around. Whether you agree with that or not, you won’t get far without at least some money.
Here are our top tips for using cash, cards and cheques when you travel:
- You can use traveller’s cheques, credit cards and bank cards in most – but not all – countries. Before leaving home, find out what you can and can't use in the countries you plan to visit.
- It’s always a good idea to have at least some cash in the local currency. Shop around for the best exchange rate.
- You can often use your bank card at ATMs in other countries. Ask your bank for a list of countries where you can use your bankcard and how much it costs to take cash out.
- Traveller’s cheques are the safest way to carry money. But you usually have to go to a bank to exchange them for cash.
- Make sure you keep a list of your traveller's cheque numbers in a safe place - not with your cheques. If the cheques are lost or stolen, you will need this list to replace them.
- If any of your bank or credit cards are lost or stolen, call and cancel them right away.
- Don’t keep all your money together in one place.
- Carry only the money you need when you go out. One of the safest ways to carry money is in a bumbag.
