White Island, also known as Whaakari, is the only live marine volcano in New Zealand. The ancient volcano, permanently covered with white steam and mist, is said to be between 100,000 and 200,000 years old!
Due to the acidic properties of the island, there are no plants. Instead, bright yellow or white crystals of sulphur form and change shape every day. The island is a great dive spot because of its crystal-clear waters. Among all this natural beauty, an old factory can be found. The factory was used to search for sulphur to make fertilizer in the 1920s, but it was soon abandoned because there were so many natural disasters there. Now, the factory is half buried from a landslide but you can still visit it. To protect the island, access to it is very restricted. However, there are organized boat tours and even helicopter and diving trips are offered!
