Imagine visiting a world brought to life in one of the greatest stories of all time. Now you can!

New Zealand director Peter Jackson flew over his home country in 1998 to look for places to film his trilogy, The Lord of the Rings. When he saw the Alexander Farm near the town of Matamata in Waikato, he thought it looked a lot like Middle Earth from The Lord of the Rings books by JRR Tolkien. So he decided to turn it into a film set for Hobbiton in The Shire, which is where the best-known hobbits from the story live.

Workers spent nine months building Hobbiton, which included 37 hobbit homes, a road, a mill and a bridge. Then about 400 filmmakers, including Peter and actors Elijah Wood and Sir Ian McKellen, spent three months there making part of the films. When they were finished, the farm owners decided to leave part of Hobbiton on the farm so tourists could visit it in the future.

You can go on a two-hour tour of the farm and visit the film set, which still has the Party Tree where Bilbo had his birthday party, the home where Bilbo and Frodo lived, called Bag End, and 16 other hobbit homes. You can also see other parts of the farm, learn about sheep shearing and even feed some of the animals.
