Where can you see more people than animals, watch lions, elephants and crocodiles in the wild and visit places that look almost the same as they did thousands of years ago? The answer is Kruger National Park, which is a game reserve in the east of South Africa and one of the biggest national parks in the world.
Nomadic people hunted for food at Kruger National Park for thousands of years until the first Europeans went there about 300 years ago. In the late 19th century the government decided to turn the park into a reserve so they could control hunting there and protect its animals. Today more than half a million people go to the park every year to have adventures in the wild.
There are many different ways to see the park, which is 360 kilometres long and 65 kilometres wide. You can see it from inside a car or from the back of an elephant. You can go on a short walking tour or on one of nine different wilderness trails that take several days to finish. And you can stay in a lodge or on one of 21 camping sites.
Just make sure you’re always with an expert! The park has more than 100,000 animals and many of them are wild and dangerous. The best time to visit the park is between June and August when the weather is hot and dry.
