Climb the volcano Mount Taranaki
13.07.2010
Taranaki and his three friends were all in love with the same girl. One day they fought over her. Taranaki lost the fight and had to leave and go far away. This is a famous story the Maori people of New Zealand use to explain why Mount Taranaki is so far from the country’s other big volcanoes.
Mount Taranki is a volcano in Egmont National Park on the North Island of New Zealand. It is more than 2,500 metres high and 120,000 years old. The Maori people named it Taranaki thousands of years ago. The British explorer Captain Cook named it Mount Egmont in the mid 1700s. Today the volcano is known by both names. It last erupted in 1775 and scientists say it could erupt again soon. But that doesn't stop more than 300,000 visitors going to see it every year.
You can climb up or ski down Mount Taranaki. It takes about eight hours to climb to the top and back down. But you have to be an expert climber to climb it in the winter when it’s covered in snow and ice. You can also drive up the volcano for a beautiful view of the park, which has thick green forests, great walking trails and a waterfall.
