A homeless teen is a semi-finalist in a science competition with a top prize of $100,000. Samantha Garvey, 17, has been living in a homeless shelter with her family since they were evicted from their home in New York City on New Year’s Eve. Her mother hasn’t been able to work since she had a car accident last February and her father hasn’t been able to pay for their home with the money he makes as a cab driver.
However, being homeless hasn't stopped Samantha from working hard at Brentwood High School. She has spent more than two years working on a marine science project and is now one of 300 semi-finalists in the Intel Science Talent Search, which gives high-school pupils a chance to win a $100,000 scholarship. "She is very special," says her father, Leo. "She's a hard worker, very driven and dedicated to anything and everything that she does."
Many people who’ve heard about the teen’s success have given money to the family, and officials have just found them a three-bedroom home. “This is just the most amazing thing you could ask for," Samantha told reporters, after hearing the good news. "We're all in tears here. This is what we've always wanted.”
