Teen sailor Abby Sunderland gives up on her dream
21.06.2010
Teen sailor Abby Sunderland had to give up on her dream to become the youngest person ever to sail around the world alone after the mast on her boat collapsed last week. A French fishing boat rescued Abby from the Indian Ocean and she’s now returning home to Thousand Oaks in California.
In her first interview since being rescued, Abby, 16, told reporters with The Associated Press that people who say her parents should never have allowed her to sail around the world alone are wrong. "They don't understand that I've sailed my whole life and I do know what I'm doing out there," she says.
Abby’s older brother, Zac, became the youngest person to sail around the world alone last year at age 17, although he didn't hold the record for very long. Abby says that she still plans to sail around the world alone one day. "I still love sailing just as much as the day that I left and I'm definitely going to keep sailing."
