Going to bed late is bad for teens
12.01.2010
Teens are more likely to get depression and think about killing themselves if they don't get enough sleep. That’s what researchers from the Columbia University Medical Center in New York found when they did a study of more than 15,000 teens aged 12 to 17.
They found that teens who don’t go to bed until midnight or later are 24% more likely to have depression and 20% more likely to think about suicide than teens who go to bed at 10:00 p.m. or earlier. Teens who go to bed early sleep longer than teens who go to bed late. And teens who sleep five or fewer hours a night are the most at risk from depression and thoughts of suicide.
"Our results are consistent with the idea that inadequate sleep is a risk factor for depression," says study researcher James E. Gangwisch. He and the other researchers are now asking parents to send teens to bed early to make sure they get enough sleep.
