Another gay teen suicide
A teenager from an extremist Christian family has killed himself after being bullied for years. Eric James Borges, 19, from Visalia in California worked with the Trevor Project, an organization that is trying to stop gay suicides. And he recently made a video for It Gets Better, a project that tells gay teens not to give up because their lives will get better.
"I know it is hard and I know what it feels like to be rejected and abused for your biological sexual orientation," he said in the video. “You will love, be loved, and I love you. You are not alone.” He also said he was bullied at school, that his family called him disgusting and kicked him out of his home, and that his mother did an exorcism on him. "My mother knew I was gay and performed an exorcism on me in an attempt to cure me.”
The Trevor Project says gay teens are eight times more likely to kill themselves if their parents reject them. Laura McGuinnis of the Trevor Project told reporters Eric knew he could get help. “Unfortunately suicide is so complicated that it is difficult to know why he made that decision. It is very, very sad.”
