Indian teen becomes world’s shortest woman
On her 18th birthday Jyoti Amge became the world’s shortest woman, at 62 cm tall. Jyoti got the title from Guinness World Records officials at her birthday party in her home city of Nagpur in India.
"It is wonderful to celebrate my 18th birthday with a new world record,” said Jyoti, who is also the world’s shortest teenager. “It's like an added birthday present. I feel grateful to be this size. After all if I weren't small and had not achieved these world records, I might never have been able to visit Japan and Europe, and many other wonderful countries.”
Jyoti, who has finished high school and hopes to go to university, has a condition called achondroplasia, which means she probably won’t ever grow any taller. She is 7cm shorter than the last woman to hold the record, Bridgette Jordan from the US. The shortest woman ever recorded was Pauline Musters of the Netherlands, who was just 61 cm when she died in 1895.
