Girls in India say no to marriage
07.12.2009
More and more teen girls in India are refusing to marry until they're at least 18. In Spot on in October we told you about marriage traditions in India – where parents often choose spouses for their children and kids get married even before they become teenagers. It is illegal for girls there to marry under the age of 18 but it still happens, especially in rural parts of the country. Now more girls are refusing to get married at such a young age. Roshan Bairwa’s family wanted her to marry a boy she didn’t know when she was just 14. But she told them no. Roshan, now 17, told the US newspaper the LA Times, “I was scared when I thought about refusing but very relieved after I did. I want to study, which wouldn’t happen if I married young.” Now Roshan hopes to become a teacher and show other girls that they can be single and successful too.
