Festival stampede kills 19 people
Police are investigating a stampede that killed 19 people at a music festival in Germany. The 19 people killed were all crushed to death and more than 340 others were injured at the Love Parade festival in the city of Duisburg on Saturday.
There was only one entrance to the festival, through a tunnel. When the tunnel became too full, people began to panic, resulting in a stampede. Police say they told the organizers last week not to use the tunnel because it was too small.
Alan Donaldson was one of the 1.4 million people at the festival. He told the BBC, "This was a nightmare. I saw one girl they were trying to resuscitate and she had broken legs. Her boyfriend was near her but there was nothing he could do. They put a cover over her in the end. This is the first time I have seen people die. Someone needs to go to jail for this."
