Teen becomes first to do GCSE in skydiving
15.02.2012
A teen girl has become the first British pupil to do skydiving as part of her state school exam. Sian Spence, 15, from Ceredigion in Wales, went indoor skydiving for the first time on her 12th birthday and fell in love with the sport. Now an exam board has agreed to assess her hobby as part of her GCSE qualification in physical education (PE).
“My friends are doing things like swimming for their PE exams and they know that I'm into skydiving, so it's not such a shock for them that I want to do this," says Sian. “My parents used to do skydiving a lot and they put me down to do indoor skydiving for my birthday, along with my grandmother, and it's just kind of gone from there.”
Sian’s father, Sandy, is a former UK skydiving gold medallist and coaches a famous parachute display team called Red Devils. He says, “I wish I could have done this at school or that it was available to me when I was competing. I think it's great.”
