Shakespeare in German?
27.01.2011
A London theatre is showing William Shakespeare’s 38 plays in 38 different languages this year in celebration of the 2012 London Olympics. Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre will show the plays over six weeks starting on Shakespeare’s birthday, which is on 23 April.
The Globe’s artistic director, Dominic Dromgoole, told reporters, "It has long been recognized that Shakespeare, as well as a great playwright, has become an international language. We want to celebrate this international popularity by welcoming Shakespeare fans to experience his work in their own languages."
The plays are part of a cultural celebration called the 2012 Cultural Olympiad and will include Julius Caesar in Italian, King Lear in Australian Aboriginal languages and The Tempest in Arabic.
