Hot, spicy, and healthy!
It's a deep yellow, bitter spice used in Asian foods. And it's a common ingredient in curry powder we can buy at the supermarket. Now, scientists have found that the spice tumeric could help fight cancer!
In tests at the Cork Cancer Research Centre in Ireland, researchers discovered that an ingredient in tumeric, called curcumin, can kill cancer cells within 24 hours. "This means that natural chemicals found in turmeric could be developed into new treatments for cancer," Dr Sharon McKenna, leader of the research team, told the BBC.
Some people already know how healthy tumeric can be. It is used in some parts of the world as an antiseptic, and scientists also think that eating it can help prevent dementia and arthritis when we get older.
Sounds like a curry a day really could keep the doctor away!
