The great ape escape
19.05.2009
A cage, a high wall and an electric fence could not stop 27-year-old Karta from escaping! Karta is an orangutan at Australia’s Adelaide Zoo. Orangutans normally live in tropical rainforests in Southeast Asia and are the world’s largest tree-dwelling animals. After Karta escaped from her cage, the owners of the zoo had to ask all the visitors to leave. One visitor who saw Karta escape was 11-year-old Ryan Johnston. He told ABC News it was “amazing”. As with all primates, orangutans are very intelligent. Karta used things from her cage to break the electric fence and help her climb two walls. Karta was only outside for about half an hour before she climbed back into her cage on her own.
