Hold on tight! Tourist hangs on to a train
Most people who miss their train just sit down and wait for the next one. But 19-year-old Chad Vance, from the US state of Alaska, didn't want to wait. Last week, Chad was on The Ghan train, which travels through 3,000 kilometres of Australia's desolate outback – from the city of Adelaide in the south to Darwin in the north. It's a three-day journey, so Chad was happy about a 40-minute-stop to stretch his legs. But when he came back to the station, he saw the train pulling away! "That's when I just went for it. I didn't even think about whether I might be in trouble," Chad told the BBC. Chad ran after the train and hung onto a handrail on the side of the carriage. At speeds of around 100 kilometres per hour, it became very dangerous. "It was really scary," Chad said. "I was worried that my hands would get numb and I'd fall off." After more than two hours, he got the attention of a member of staff who stopped the train and let Chad inside. That was lucky for Chad – the next stop wasn't planned for another three hours!
