Wyclef Jean is helping Haiti
22.01.2010
Rapper Wyclef Jean is helping to raise money for his home country of Haiti after a 7.0 earthquake killed up to 100,000 people there.
The earthquake happened on 12 January about 15 kilometres from the Haiti’s capital city of Port-au-Prince. The next day, Wyclef travelled home from the US and started using the Internet to encourage people to give money to a charity he works with called the Yele Haiti Foundation. The charity is using the money to help the three million people in Haiti who have been affected by the earthquake.
Wyclef, who became a star with the band the Fugees in the 1990s, wrote on his Twitter page that the earthquake isn't like anything his country has ever experienced. "I cannot stress enough what a human disaster this is and idle hands will only make things worse,” he says. People are listening to Wyclef. His charity’s web site was getting so much money the day after the earthquake that it crashed.
