I was getting ready for bed when I heard a loud crack and a crash. I ran outside and saw that a big oak tree had fallen across the road outside my house. Luckily it hadn’t fallen on anything or anyone.

The police came to make sure nobody crashed into the tree. And a few hours later these other men came with a big truck and fed the tree into a woodcutter. It made so much noise. I don’t think anyone on our street got much sleep that night!

One of the men told me that there are over two million trees in LA. The oak tree fell because the top of it was too heavy. But most of the trees that fall down here are palm trees. Unlike oak trees, palm trees are not native to California. People brought them here from other countries, mostly Spain and Mexico, hundreds of years ago.

There are palm trees all over the city. There's one in front of my house that's as tall as a ten-storey building. But now many of them are dying from old age or a fungal disease. City officials can't stop them from dying so they're planting more native trees instead.

I was sad to see our oak tree go. It had looked so lovely leaning across the road. I just hope the palm tree doesn’t fall down next. It would probably fall on my car!

A few years ago when there was "Lothar" making fall down an awful lot of trees in my region, one big tree behind our house fell down, too. It also made me really sad! In my view, it's amazing how you can feel sorry for trees fallen down. Plants being still alive, most people almost don't care about them- they often don't even notice any!
