LA’s mystery house of Davids
A few weeks ago, I told you about the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose in California. Yesterday I discovered that we have our own mystery house here in Los Angeles. It's called Youngwood Court but is better known as the House of Davids and is on the corner of Muirfield Road and 3rd Street in a rich area called Hancock Park.
I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw it. It’s so bizarre! It has a small replica of the ancient Greek statue Venus de Milo and busts of lion heads on the roof. But the strangest thing has to be the 19 replicas of Michelangelo’s famous statue David that are standing next to each other on the front lawn.
I stood looking at the house for ages, then went online to find out more about it. So here’s the deal: An eccentric R&B singer called Norwood Young started renting the seven-bedroom, seven-bathroom house in 1994 and bought it in 1997 for 1.2 million dollars. A year later, he put up the statues, despite disapproval from his neighbours. He also decorates the house at Christmas with elaborate lighting.
The inside of the house is just as strange as the outside. It has lots of fake dogs, furniture hanging from the dining room ceiling and chairs that are almost as big as the room they’re in. If you want to see the house for yourself, you better hurry! Norwood put it up for sale this summer and it’s likely the new owner will take the statues – and all the other strangeness – away.
