It’s a mystery!
12.07.2011
After reading about it and imagining it, I finally got to visit the Winchester Mystery House. This crazy house in San Jose in California has stairs that go nowhere, a window in a floor and a door that opens onto a sheer drop.
It was amazing to see it all with my own eyes. But the more I learned, the more I realized that the biggest mystery of the house isn’t the building but the woman who built it, Sarah Winchester.
Sarah was married to William Winchester, who owned the gun company, Winchester Repeating Arms Company. She lost her only child and later lost her husband. In 1884, at the age of 45, she bought the house in San Jose and started building room after room.
Our tour guide took us through 110 of the 160 rooms, including the secret room where Sarah tried to contact spirits and the bedroom where she died in 1922. We found out that Sarah lived in this huge house with only her niece and servants. She never had any guests to visit and she rarely went out in public.
Some people say Sarah was crazy. But I think she was just grief-stricken. She didn’t want to go on living without her family so hid away from the real world and focused on the spirit world instead. Well, that's my take on it anyway. What's yours?
