“I want candy.” That’s the name of a famous song that was first recorded by a band called The Strangeloves in 1965. It’s also something I say all the time. My friends tell me I have a sweet tooth because I love to eat sweet things. Here in the US we call sweet things, like chocolate and sweets, candy. I miss some of the sweets from Europe. But I have had a lot of fun eating American candy for the first time.

I often bought jelly beans when I was growing up in Ireland. They all tasted the same and were too sweet. But in the US, you can buy the most amazing jelly beans. They come in about 70 different colors and flavors. You can get beans that taste like coconut, coffee and even popcorn. In Europe, you can buy salty popcorn or sweet popcorn. But in the US, you can get kettle korn, which is both salty and sweet. It’s one of my favorite things. I always buy a big bag of it when I go to the cinema.

Frozen yoghurt became really popular in the US a few years ago. It tastes like ice cream but has fewer calories and can even be good for you. Many shops sell frozen yoghurt and nothing else. I go to Yoghurtland in Westwood with my friends at least once a week. We each take a cup and fill it with as much yoghurt in as many flavors as we want. I love the rich flavours like chocolate, caramel and coffee. Then we choose from about 20 different toppings, including fruit, nuts and sweets. When we’re finished, we weigh everything, pay and enjoy. It’s so much fun!

I love trying new things. But not everything I have tried here has tasted good. When I was younger, I often read about children in books drinking root beer. I imagined that it tasted very strange. I was right. The first time I went to a restaurant in the US, I asked for a big glass of root beer. I drank one sip and I felt sick. It tasted like mouthwash. Who wants to drink mouthwash? That was not what my sweet tooth was expecting. I gave back the root beer and had a nice sugary cola instead.
