Happy 2012!

We are starting 2012 with summer weather here in Los Angeles. My friends and I spent New Year's Eve in a park and at midnight, we watched the sky light up with fireworks. Then we sat around talking about our plans for this year. We have so much to look forward to, new travel and adventure, the Summer Olympics in London, and according to some people, the end of the world on 21 December.

The end-of-the-world prediction is based on a misinterpretation of an ancient Mayan calendar. Some of my friends think we should live every year like it's the last, but I'm not sure that this is such a good idea. If we really thought the world was going to end in December, we would have no reason to plan for the future – to go to school or work, to save money, or to care about the environment. It's a much better idea if we live as though we only have one year left to save the world.

Most people don't believe that the world is really going to end. But if we don't change how we live, the world as we know it is probably going to end soon. In the last 200 years, the population has increased from 1 billion to almost 7 billion, and there will be 10 billion people on the planet by 2050. At the same time, we're running out of things like oil and because of global warming, fresh drinking water. We need to start taking better care of the enviornment now so we can make a better future for everyone.
