Could you be a real-life superhero?
For some reason, summer is always a big season for superheroes. I realized this when we were working on the article in the August Spot on about comic-book superhero films. There are usually a couple to see in cinemas this time of year. Captain America is the latest – it will open in German cinemas in a couple of weeks.
Like the comic books they are based on, these superhero films are often fun, feel-good entertainment. They're like modern-day fairytales – from the secret identities and love stories, to the epic battles between the superhero and the bad guys. Plus, there's always the fun of imagining what kind of superhero you would be.
Well, some people have moved on from just imagining. They've turned themselves into real-life superheroes, like Manchester teenager Roger Hayhurst. During the day, this 19 year old is a gardener. But if you see him in his blue and black lycra costume and mask, don't call him Roger – he's Knight Warrior.
If you detect a twitching smile behind my words, you're not wrong. Watch the video below, and you might see why. It's all just a little bit silly. But on the other hand, why can't we all be a little bit like Roger? He says his only superpower is his wish to make the world a better place. Yes, it's a little bit corny, but isn't that what we all desire? We all have the same superpower.
Roger – as Knight Warrior – puts his superpower into action by patrolling the streets and pubs of Manchester. He helps those who need it, and he stops fights. "When people see me coming up it does tend to stun them into silence," he says. "I just carry on trying to get them to calm down, and eventually most of them do."
I've never been in a real physical fight with anyone, but I can only imagine that I'd stop fighting if this guy showed up.
There's no question, the superhero job comes with big risks. That's why Roger says that when things get too much for him, he calls the police. Good idea! And that's why I would say – don't try this at home! But why not do a little to bring out your own inner superpower?
The truth is, the cape and mask might be fun, but we can all still do something to make the world a better place in our normal clothes. Which is a good thing, because lycra will make you sweat! :-)
