Christmas time, movie time
With long, cold nights, this is the perfect time of year for curling up on the couch with your friends and a big plate of Christmas cookies. So what's your Christmas movie type?
If you love modern-day fairy tales, London, Hugh Grant or Colin Firth – Love Actually and Bridget Jones's Diary.
These movies are both great any time of the year, but they're especially great at Christmas. Love Actually is a classic from 2003 with the love and life stories of many different characters woven in together. Poignant, funny, happy and sad, Love Actually has it all. And if it leaves your eyes a little wet, dry them with laughter while you watch Bridget Jones try to get her life in order (which of course includes getting the man of her dreams).
If you love cult classics or movies that are so bad that they are awesome – Santa Claus Conquers the Martians.
Americans have just named this movie from 1964 the Number One worst Christmas movie, but this so-bad-it's-good movie will make you laugh with its cardboard sets, silly costumes and funny story about Santa Claus bringing Christmas to Mars.
If you think you want to be reminded of what Christmas was like when you were a kid – A Christmas Story.
If you remember what it was like to be so excited about Christmas that you couldn't sleep at night, then you'll identify with Ralphie, this movie's main character. With its merry – but also sometimes darker – look at what it's like to be a kid at Christmas, this is a funny, endearing and yet slightly disturbing story.
If you want a good old-fashioned Santa Claus tale – Miracle on 34th Street.
The original came out in 1947 and it was remade in 1994. An old man gets arrested in New York City, because people think he is crazy – why else would he be telling everyone that he is Kirs Kringle (a.k.a. Santa Claus)? It takes one special little girl to help Mr Kringle convince skeptical New Yorkers that he really is magic. This sweet story might be a good one to watch with your younger siblings or cousins.
If you're looking for something to make you laugh out loud – Elf.
A very funny Will Ferrell plays Buddy – a human who has grown up with elves at the North Pole, but now wants to learn more about his home and family in New York. If you need a good dose of Christmas cheer, this movie will have you laughing from start to finish.
Merry Christmas! :-)
